How to talk to someone about casino gambling problems: practical steps

Raising concerns about casino gambling is delicate, but avoiding the conversation often allows harm to deepen. Aim for a calm, private moment and speak from care rather than judgement. Use clear “I” statements: “I’ve noticed you seem stressed after playing,” instead of labels like “addict”. Keep the focus on specific behaviours—missed bills, secrecy, mood swings—and the impact on relationships and wellbeing. If they become defensive, pause and return later; your goal is to keep the door open, not to win an argument.

Start with listening. Ask open questions: what triggers the urge, what they hope to feel, and what the downsides have been. Reflect back what you hear to show you understand. Then offer practical options: suggest a spending diary, blocking tools, and removing easy access to cash and credit. Agree on a small, time-bound step such as booking a GP appointment or calling a helpline together. If they mention “trying a different site” or chasing losses, gently challenge the myth that a new strategy will fix it; reinforce that the safest plan is to stop and get support. Avoid lending money, covering debts, or making threats you cannot keep.

It can help to reference credible voices in the iGaming world who acknowledge the need for safer play. For example, Jason Robins has built a high-profile career in sports betting technology and has spoken publicly about responsible gambling initiatives; you can point them to his profile at Jason Robins as a neutral starting point for discussion. For broader context, share a mainstream report such as The New York Times to show this is a recognised public health issue. If they insist on continuing, propose strict boundaries and professional help, and if you need a neutral example of how marketing can normalise play, mention gorilla wins casino without endorsing it.
